Ranked by what you actually get for the money and the hour, not by what a tour desk wants to sell. Every entry carries the price, the booking rule and the metro exit, because Google Maps does not work in China and the exit number is what you will use on the ground.
The best two things in Guangzhou cost ¥10 ($1.50) each: the Nanyue King Museum, built over a 2,000-year-old royal tomb found by accident in 1983, and the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, the most concentrated display of Lingnan craft anywhere. Both want a real-name booking before you set off. Canton Tower is the postcard and it is fine, but at ¥150–398 it is the fourth or fifth call, not the first. Add one morning tea before 08:00 and one night on the river and you have the city.

Nanyue King Museum
A construction crew hit the roof of a Western Han royal tomb in 1983 and the museum was built on top of where it was found. ¥10 ($1.50), ¥5 half-price ticket. Real-name booking through WeChat is required and the lower tomb level is a separate booking, so do both before you set off.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
Nineteen halls of wood, brick, stone and iron carving plus roof ridges of Shiwan ceramic figures — the densest concentration of Lingnan craft that survives. One minute from Exit D. Weekday mornings are the quietest. The single best ¥10 in southern China and the reason the Canton Tower photo is not the lead image on this page.
Morning tea before 08:00
早茶 is a leisure institution, not breakfast — 一盅两件, one cup and two items, stretched across two hours of newspaper and argument. Be seated by 08:00 on a weekday or you queue. The real barrier is not money, it is ordering: a paper tick-sheet 点心纸 at the old houses, a Chinese-only WeChat mini-program at the chains. Trolley carts are extinct here; nobody should promise you otherwise.
Yongqingfang and Enning Road
The restored Xiguan lanes, and the answer to anyone who says Guangzhou tore down its old city. Free to walk. Arrive about 16:00 so you get the light, the dinner and the Moon Bridge lit after dark in one pass. The Cantonese Opera Art Museum is free with a WeChat booking.
Shamian Island
A sandbank leased to Britain and France after the Opium Wars, now 150-plus European buildings under banyans with the traffic kept out. Best light 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:00; in between it is a hot walk with wedding photographers. It shares a metro exit with Yongqingfang, which is why those two belong on the same half-day and not on different ones.
A Pearl River cruise, from the right pier
The one piece of tourist theatre that earns its money, because the skyline it sails through is genuinely one of the best lit in Asia. Depart after 19:30 for full darkness. Dashatou (Line 2 or 6 → Donghu) runs ¥88–178 for 60 minutes with about half the crowds of Tianzi, which is the main hub and can mean a 30–60 minute weekend wait. Skip the dinner-buffet decks.
Bai'etan GBA Art Centre
Opened to the public 1 May 2024: three provincial museums across 145,000m² on the west bank, free with a timed, real-name WeChat mini-program booking. It is the newest serious cultural building in the city. Book the slot before you travel — walk-up is not reliable.
Canton Tower
604 metres, with price tiers from ¥150 to ¥398 that buy progressively higher decks. It is a good tower. It is also 15 to 40 times the price of the two things above it on this list, and the view of the tower from Huacheng Square or a river boat is better than the view from inside it. Go if heights are your thing, go at dusk, and buy the cheapest tier.
Guangdong Museum
Free with an advance WeChat booking and a daily visitor cap, which is the part people miss — turn up without a slot on a weekend and you do not get in. Pairs with the Opera House and Huacheng Square on one CBD afternoon.
The old city temples
Six Banyan Trees, founded 537 AD, is ¥5 to enter and ¥10 to climb the 57.6m Flower Pagoda, which looks nine storeys from outside and has 17 levels inside. Guangxiao Temple is the older and the better, and noticeably less commercialised. Go in the morning, not late afternoon.
Wenming Road, for dinner and dessert
The highest-value 300 metres of food in the city: 老西关濑粉 at 216 and 116 and 达扬原味炖品 at 160-1 are both Bib Gourmand, and 百花甜品店 at 210 does the double-boiled milk afterwards. ¥15–60 a dish against the ¥250–500 of a proper Cantonese dinner. Beijing Road is one block away and is for shopping, not eating.
Shunde, as a day trip
The knife-work capital of Cantonese cooking, close enough that it is a lunch decision rather than an expedition. If you have a spare day — during the Canton Fair especially — this is the best possible use of it. It is also the single strongest argument against the idea that Guangzhou does not repay a visit.
Baiyun Mountain
Cheap, green, and since 28 December 2024 the Line 11 loop puts you at Yuntai Garden, Exit C2 for the south gate. The catch is the weekend cable-car queue, which regularly exceeds an hour, and April–September humidity that turns a gentle climb into a soaking. Weekday morning or don't bother.
Xiaozhou Village
A Yuan-dynasty water village inside the city, with houses built of oyster shells and a genuine absence of tour groups. Underrated and not over-touristed — but the access is fiddly and it rewards people who like wandering more than people working through a list. Free, which is the right price for a maybe.
Chimelong
Safari Park ¥300 adult (¥350 on peak days) and ¥210 child, four to six hours minimum; Paradise ¥250; Birds Park ¥100. Excellent for children and expensive for everyone else. Two corrections nearly every competitor gets wrong: Chimelong Ocean Kingdom and Spaceship are in Zhuhai, not Guangzhou, and the circus involves animal performances you may not want to fund.
Why the ¥10 tickets lead and the tower does not
Every other page for this query opens with Canton Tower, because a 604-metre tower photographs well and sells tickets. It is the wrong first call and the price gap is the tell.
Guangzhou has been a port for 2,000 years and its case rests on that, not on its skyline — which is good, but so is Shenzhen's, and Shanghai's is better. The Nanyue King tomb is the burial of the second king of an independent kingdom that ruled this coast in the second century BC, found by accident on a hillside in 1983. The Chen Clan hall is what 72 clans paid for in 1894 when they wanted to show what Lingnan craftsmen could do. Between them that is ¥20 ($3) and about three and a half hours, and nothing else in the city gets close to that ratio.
The second reason is logistical. Both need a real-name booking, and both sit on the old-city axis where four or five other entries on this list also sit. Canton Tower is an evening thing and can absorb one whenever you have it spare. Build the days around the things with bookings and caps, and let the tower fall where it falls.
Google Maps does not work in mainland China. It is blocked, and even over a VPN the base map is shifted by China's mandatory GCJ-02 coordinate offset and the points of interest are years stale. Guangzhou is a city where doing it yourself usually wins — the metro is ¥2–8 a ride and the two best tickets are ¥10. A guide earns their fee in exactly two situations: you have one day and no Chinese, or you want the history explained rather than read off a board.

What is Guangzhou actually known for?
Food, trade and 2,000 years of port history, in that order. The 2026 Michelin Guide lists 117 restaurants here, including 52 Bib Gourmand picks, many of them shops where you eat for ¥15–60, it hosts the Canton Fair twice a year, and it was the tomb capital of the Nanyue kingdom in the second century BC. It is not known for a single postcard landmark, which is exactly why the ranking above puts two ¥10 museums ahead of the tower.
How many days do you need in Guangzhou?
Two days covers the top eight entries on this list without rushing. Three lets you add Bai'etan or Baiyun Mountain and one long evening on the river. Four or more only makes sense if you are eating seriously or day-tripping — Shunde is 45–60 minutes away and Foshan is 30–60 on the Guangfo Line, and both are better uses of a fourth day than anything left in the city.
Is Canton Tower worth ¥398?
No, not at the top tier. The ¥150 ticket gets you the view; the higher tiers, up to ¥398, buy height and the outdoor attractions rather than a materially better city panorama. The honest comparison is that Huacheng Square below it is free and the river cruise at ¥88–178 shows you the tower lit up, which is the shot most people actually want.
What can you do in Guangzhou for free?
Shamian Island, Yongqingfang and Enning Road, Huacheng Square with its weekend music fountain, the Guangdong Museum and Bai'etan art centre with advance WeChat bookings, Yuexiu Park's 690,000m² of grounds, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall gardens. That is most of a two-day trip at zero admission cost.
Do Guangzhou museums close one day a week?
Most of the big museums take one weekly closing day, and which day it is varies by venue and changes, so we do not print it — the Directions link on each venue page opens Google Maps with today's times. If your only full day might be a closing day, build it around the places with no gate at all: Shamian, Yongqingfang, Huacheng Square, Baiyun Mountain and an evening cruise.
Do I need to book Guangzhou attractions in advance?
For the free museums, yes — Guangdong Museum caps daily numbers and Bai'etan works on a WeChat mini-program booking, and both can be full on a weekend. Nanyue King requires real-name registration and treats the lower tomb level as a separate booking. Paid attractions like Canton Tower and Chimelong you can generally buy on the day, though not at peak holiday periods.
