Is Canton Tower Worth It? The ¥150, ¥298 and ¥398 Tickets Compared (2026)
Canton Tower is a genuinely good observation deck sold with a genuinely bad ticketing policy: you buy on a schedule, not on the visibility, and Guangzhou is hazy a lot. Arrive about an hour before sunset on a clear day and the ¥398 all-inclusive pass is excellent value — you get daylight, dusk and the illuminated skyline on one ticket. On a grey day, take the ¥150 base ticket or skip it entirely: the free viewpoints across the river are better photographs anyway, because they put the tower in the shot. Budget 2–4 hours, or 3–4 more if you add dinner and a river cruise.
Which Canton Tower ticket should you actually buy?
Four products, and the difference between them is not obvious at the counter. The one thing to understand: the ¥150 ticket already gets you higher than most observation decks on earth. Everything above it is buying rides, not altitude.
| Ticket | Price | What you get | Time | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 433m Starry Sky Hall | ¥150 (~$21) | Indoor deck with glass walkways projecting 0.6m out over the drop. Concession ¥75. | 60–90 min | WORTH IT |
| 460m Bubble Tram package | ¥298 (~$42) | Adds the 16 transparent pods on a horizontal ring — effectively the world's highest ferris wheel, a 20-minute circuit. Concession ¥255. | 2 hrs | DEPENDS |
| 488m all-inclusive pass | ¥398 (~$56) | The lot: 433m hall, 450m open-air ring, Bubble Tram, and the 488m Photography Deck — the Guinness-recognised highest outdoor observation platform in the world. | 2–4 hrs | DEPENDS |
| Sky Drop (standalone) | ¥180 (~$25) | A 60-second vertical drop from 455m at about 1.5G. The world's highest of its kind, and over before you have processed it. | 20 min | SKIP |
Prices as published by the operator and checked August 2026. Free entry over 65; half price for students, ages 60–64, children 1.2–1.5m and birthday visitors. Booking at least a day ahead is usually about 10% cheaper, and combo tickets save around 30% against buying the parts separately. Ride opening hours conflict across three different published schedules and the last Monday of the month is maintenance — check on the day.
Canton Tower, hour by hour
The single decision that makes or breaks this ticket is what time you arrive. One hour before sunset is the answer almost every day of the year, and it is not close.
★ The answer. Arrive now and one ticket buys you daylight, sunset and the lit skyline. Book ahead — this slot sells.

Canton Tower tickets and the alternatives
Buying ahead is typically about 10% cheaper than the gate and, more usefully, locks in the sunset slot — which is the only slot that reliably justifies the top tier.
The free viewpoints that put the tower in the photograph
This is the argument the ticket sellers cannot make: the best Canton Tower photograph in Guangzhou is taken from somewhere that is not Canton Tower, and it costs nothing.
Haixin Bridge is the definitive position. The pedestrian bridge opened in 2021 and its midpoint frames the tower head-on across the water with the CBD behind you. It is free, though at peak times it runs a timed WeChat reservation, so it is worth checking before you walk over.
Haixinsha Asian Games Park gives you the same view from ground level with more room, and the sail canopies left over from the 2010 opening ceremony are a decent foreground. Huacheng Square has a curved viewing platform facing the tower directly — arrive by 19:00 for the music fountain, and note the crowd thins noticeably after 20:30.
There is also a straightforwardly better paid option if what you want is height with the tower in view: the CTF Finance Centre at 530m and the IFC at 438m both have high-level hotel bars, both participate in the synchronised nightly light show, and both — unlike the tower — let you look at the thing everybody came to see. A drink at either costs less than the ¥398 pass.
Google Maps does not work in mainland China. It is blocked, and even over a VPN the base map is shifted by China's mandatory GCJ-02 coordinate offset and the points of interest are years stale. The Directions button on this page is for planning from home. On the ground use Amap (高德地图), which has a real English mode — or just use the metro line, station and exit number printed on every page here, which is what locals use.
Canton Tower questions people actually search
How much does Canton Tower cost?
¥150 (about $21) for the 433m Starry Sky Hall, ¥298 for the package including the 460m Bubble Tram, and ¥398 (about $56) for the all-inclusive pass up to the 488m Photography Deck. The Sky Drop is ¥180 standalone. Concessions run roughly half price, over-65s go free, and booking a day or more ahead is usually about 10% cheaper.
Is the ¥398 ticket worth it over the ¥150 one?
Only on a clear day, and mainly for the Bubble Tram rather than the extra 55 metres. The view from 433m and the view from 488m are not meaningfully different; the difference you are paying for is the transparent pod ride and the open-air deck. On a hazy day the ¥150 ticket loses you nothing at all.
What time should I go to Canton Tower?
About an hour before sunset. One ticket then buys you the daytime view, the sunset and the illuminated skyline, which is three visits for the price of one. Avoid 12:00–15:00, when coach groups are heaviest and the visibility payoff is worst.
Can you see Canton Tower for free?
Yes, and arguably better. Haixin Bridge, Haixinsha Asian Games Park and the curved platform at Huacheng Square all frame it across the river for nothing. The tower's own reflection-pool light show runs at 20:00 and 21:30 at its base — which is to say, you can only watch it from outside.
How do you get to Canton Tower?
Metro Line 3 or the APM line to Canton Tower station, Exits A or B. The APM is the more interesting approach — it is driverless, costs a flat ¥2, and runs the length of the new city's ceremonial axis under Huacheng Square in about eight minutes from Zhujiang New Town.
Is Canton Tower open on Mondays?
Yes, but the last Monday of each month is a maintenance day with reduced or late opening, and the ride schedules in particular vary. Three different opening schedules are in circulation online, so check on the day rather than trusting any of them — including this one.
Do I need to book Canton Tower tickets in advance?
Not to get in, but yes if you want the sunset hour, which sells. Booking ahead is also usually about 10% cheaper than the gate. What you cannot book around is the weather: there are no refunds for a zero-visibility day, which is the single most common complaint in the reviews.
