Which deck to buy, and the one to avoid
Every boat sells the same trip four times over. The differences are real but they are not what the pricing implies — you are mostly buying air conditioning and a table, not a better view.

Whatever class you buy, avoid the lowest deck. It sits close to the waterline with restricted sightlines and engine noise, and on several boats the windows are fixed — it is the one seat that genuinely ruins the trip.
Five rules that decide whether this is ¥88 well spent
The cruise is a good product sold badly. Almost every disappointing review traces back to one of these five things.
Depart after 19:30. Guangzhou's building illuminations and the bridge lighting are the entire show, and before full darkness you are looking at grey concrete. Sunset sailings sound romantic and consistently underdeliver — the 20:00 and 20:30 departures are the ones to want.
Book ahead. There are almost no tickets sold at the pier for the good departures, and Tianzi in particular runs 30–60 minute queues at weekends for whatever is left. Arrive 30 minutes before departure even with a booking, because boarding closes early and the wharves are large.
Skip the buffet. This is the one unanimous verdict across every review source: the food on the dinner cruises is poor. You are in the food capital of Cantonese cooking — eat properly before or after, and see what to eat or the late-night options for where.
Get outside. Whatever ticket class you hold, go to the open deck for the passage between the bridges. The glass on the enclosed decks reflects the cabin lighting straight back into every photograph you try to take.
Understand what you are looking at. The route runs past the old bund, under six illuminated bridges, and along the CBD waterfront with Canton Tower on one bank and the towers of Zhujiang New Town on the other. That symmetry is the whole reason the boat beats the tower deck: from up in the tower, the tower is not in the view.
