Best Time to Visit Guangzhou:
Late November, Not October
The weather verdict is unusually clean: mid-October to early December. Rain collapses from 365mm in June to 33–67mm, average humidity drops from about 80% to the high 60s, and daytime highs sit at 21–29°C. The problem is that those weeks collide with National Day (1–7 October) and the autumn Canton Fair (15 October – 4 November 2026), when hotel rates typically run 2–4× normal and the good rooms go weeks ahead. So the real answer, which no competing guide makes: late November to early December. Same weather, no fair, low prices. Avoid June–August entirely — 33°C at around 80% humidity with 240–365mm of rain, and a heat index regularly over 40°C.
Guangzhou's year, honestly
Temperatures and monthly rainfall. The pattern is not subtle: a long hot wet season, then three genuinely excellent months.
回南天 — the phenomenon nobody warns you about
February and March bring 回南天 (huí nán tiān), when warm saturated sea air hits surfaces still cold from a winter snap and water condenses on walls, floors, mirrors and railings at 90–100% humidity. Marble hotel lobbies get genuinely slippery, laundry will not dry, and mould appears on leather in days. It comes in waves of a few days to a week, several times across those two months. Almost nothing in English warns you about it.
In practice it means: tiled floors and marble hotel lobbies become genuinely slippery (hotels put out mats and cones), laundry will not dry and clothes start to smell, mould appears on leather and shoes within days, camera lenses fog the moment you step outside, and every household runs a dehumidifier — supermarkets stack them by the door in February. It arrives in waves lasting a few days to a week, several times across February and March.
If your dates are fixed in that window, it is survivable and the city is cheap — but pack accordingly, keep electronics in a bag with silica gel, and do not plan a laundry day.

Two things people worry about, calibrated
Typhoons: the official season is June to early November, with the highest risk July–September, and in a typical year a few meaningfully affect the city. But Guangzhou sits about 120km inland up the Pearl River estuary, so it usually takes the rain-and-wind tail rather than an eyewall hit — Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong absorb the brunt. When one does land, Baiyun cancels flights en masse, Guangdong high-speed rail suspends, above-ground metro sections may stop, and schools and offices close under the signal system. The benchmark recent event was Super Typhoon Ragasa, which made landfall in Yangjiang on 24 September 2025, one of the strongest storms of the year, after more than a dozen Guangdong cities had suspended school, work, business and transport. Also worth naming: 龙舟水, Dragon Boat Rain, roughly 21 May to 20 June — the front-stalling continuous-rain period and the wettest stretch of the year.
Air quality is a genuine improvement story, not a complaint. Annual mean PM2.5 has fallen from the mid-30s µg/m³ in the late 2010s to 21.5 in 2025, the city's environment bureau reports, with 93.4% of days meeting the national air-quality standard. For context: China's national annual standard is 35 µg/m³, which Guangzhou comfortably meets; the WHO guideline is 5, which it is about four times above. Worst November–February (dry-season inversions plus autumn ozone), best May–September when monsoon rain scavenges particulates. One caveat that matters: Guangzhou appeared in an IQAir "top 10 most polluted" daily snapshot on 30 September 2025 — that is an hourly-ranking artefact, not an annual verdict, and it should never be quoted without this sentence attached.
The calendar that actually shapes prices
| When | What | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Late Jan – 5 Feb 2027 | CNY flower markets | Guangzhou's signature tradition and the most distinctive CNY custom in China. The markets run in the days before New Year's Eve (5 February 2027); district-by-district dates are usually announced in January. In 2026 there were 11 markets with 2,655 stalls. |
| 6 Feb 2027 | Chinese New Year's Day — Year of the Goat | The 2027 river celebrations had not been announced at the time of writing. |
| Mid-May | Dragon boats 'awakened' from the mud (起龙) | Photogenic ritual before the festival proper. |
| Dragon Boat Festival | 扒龙舟 village visiting in Liwan, Haizhu and Tianhe | Far more interesting than the formal races. Free viewing from the Ersha Island eastern embankment — arrive early for a place on the wall, and expect 32°C. |
| 25–27 Sept 2026 | Mid-Autumn holiday | Travel days before and after become lotteries. |
| 1–7 Oct 2026 | National Day golden week | Avoid. Trains and hotels at their worst. |
| 15–19, 23–27 Oct · 31 Oct–4 Nov | Canton Fair, 140th session | Hotel rates typically 2–4×, the best-placed rooms gone weeks ahead. The single biggest price event of the year. |
| Mid-to-late Nov | Guangzhou International Light Festival | Free but WeChat reservation required. 2026 dates not yet announced — assume mid-to-late November. |
| Mid-to-late Dec | Guangzhou Marathon | Significant road closures on race day; date confirmed each autumn. |
Questions people actually search
What is the best month to visit Guangzhou?
Late November. October to early December is the weather answer — 33–67mm of rain against June's 365mm, humidity in the high 60s, daytime highs 21–29°C — but October collides with National Day and the Canton Fair, when rooms cost two to four times normal. Late November gives you the same weather with none of the price spike.
What is the rainy season in Guangzhou?
April through September, with every month over 150mm and June peaking at 365mm across about 19 rain days. Add 龙舟水 — Dragon Boat Rain — from roughly 21 May to 20 June, when weather fronts stall over the delta and it rains continuously for days.
What is huinantian?
回南天 — February and March, when warm saturated sea air meets surfaces still cold from a winter snap and water condenses on walls, floors, mirrors and railings at 90–100% humidity. Floors get slippery, laundry will not dry, and mould appears on leather within days. It is the most under-covered practical fact about Guangzhou in English.
Should I avoid Guangzhou during the Canton Fair?
For a leisure trip, yes. The 140th session runs 15–19 and 23–27 October and 31 October–4 November 2026, and the spring 2026 session drew 314,000 overseas buyers. Hotel rates typically run two to four times normal and the best-placed rooms go weeks ahead. It is the single biggest reason our recommended window is late November rather than October.
Does it get cold in Guangzhou?
Not really — January averages 18.7°C by day and 10.6°C at night, and there is no heating in most buildings, which makes a damp January evening feel colder than the number suggests. Guangzhou recorded its first snowfall in 87 years during the January 2016 cold snap, which tells you how exceptional that is.
