Where to Stay in Guangzhou:
Every Area, Priced and Ranked
Most guides describe five districts positively and let you pick. This one gives you a default — Yuexiu — then the three situations where it is wrong, plus the two China-specific booking problems that cost you an evening if you learn them at the front desk.
Stay in Yuexiu unless you have a specific reason not to — it is the historic core, sits on Metro Lines 1, 2 and 6, and runs 30–40% below Tianhe for the same standard of room. Choose Tianhe if you are here on business or need dependable English, Liwan if you came for Cantonese food and culture, and Pazhou only if you are attending the Canton Fair. Budget bands citywide: hostel dorm ¥60–110 (~$8–15), budget and 3★ ¥180–350, 4★ ¥400–750, 5★ ¥900–1,800. Canton Fair fortnight multiplies all of that by 2–4× and sells out 60–90 days ahead.
Nine places you could sleep, priced
Bands are normal-season rack rates checked August 2026 and exclude the two Canton Fair fortnights. The rail column is the one that decides your days — Google Maps does not work in China, so the metro line is how you actually navigate.
| Area | Per night | Rail it actually has | Best for | Avoid if | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yuexiu | ¥200–1,200 | Lines 1, 2, 6 | First visits, heritage, food, value | You need English at reception | WORTH IT |
| Liwan (Xiguan) | ¥180–1,500 | Lines 1, 6, 8 | Cantonese food and culture | You want a modern room | WORTH IT |
| Dongshankou | ¥200–1,200 | Lines 1, 6 | Coffee, villas, aimless walking | You want sights on the doorstep | WORTH IT |
| Tianhe | ¥350–2,500 | Lines 1, 3 | Business, malls, English | You are on a budget | DEPENDS |
| Zhujiang New Town | ¥600–2,800 | Lines 3, 5, APM | Skyline views, luxury brands | You want a neighbourhood after 21:00 | DEPENDS |
| Haizhu (Binjiang East) | ¥180–600 | Lines 2, 3, 8, tram | Local eating, river, Canton Tower | You need tourist infrastructure | DEPENDS |
| Pazhou | ¥300–3,000 | Line 8 | The Canton Fair, and only that | You are not at the fair | SKIP |
| Panyu | ¥180–750 | Lines 3, 4, 7 | Chimelong, families, space | You want the old city | DEPENDS |
| Baiyun airport | ¥180–750 | Lines 3, 9 | A dawn flight, nothing else | You have a full day in the city | SKIP |
Tianhe runs 30–40% above Yuexiu for the same standard. That single fact is worth more than any amenity list on this page — it is roughly the price of an extra night, for a district with almost no heritage in it.
Two things about booking a hotel in China that nobody prints
Both of these are structural, both are specific to mainland China, and both are the sort of thing you discover standing at a front desk with your luggage.
Plenty of cheap Chinese hotels will not accept a foreign passport. It is not a scam and it is not personal — a property needs the registration system and the licence to lodge foreign nationals, and a lot of small domestic hotels simply do not have it. There is no reliable way to tell from a listing photo. The fix is to book through an app that filters for foreign-passport acceptance, and to have the booking confirmed rather than merely requested before you turn up. If you are quoted a price that looks impossibly good for the area, this is usually why.
Booking.com's China inventory is genuinely partial. Several domestic chains that dominate the ¥180–350 band — Hanting, Jinjiang, Home Inn, Vienna, Atour — are largely absent from it. We run Booking links on this site and it is still the honest thing to say: for the mid-budget band specifically you are seeing a subset of what exists. Trip.com is the platform that carries those chains and is effectively the only way a foreigner books China high-speed rail; we have no affiliate relationship with it and will not link it, but you should know it exists. Booking is strong for the international 4★ and 5★ brands, which is where most visitors book anyway.
Two smaller ones. Rates on this page exclude the Canton Fair — 15–19 October, 23–27 October and 31 October – 4 November 2026 — when Pazhou and Tianhe both go 2–4× and the good rooms are gone 60–90 days out. And near the metro in a listing frequently means a different station from the one you assumed; check the line number, not the walking minutes.

Same dates, three searches. The gap between them is usually larger than anything you will save by switching star rating.

Guangzhou is cheap.
A resident's summary of Guangzhou against Shanghai was three characters — 差不多, roughly the same — with one exception, and the exception is hotels. Search your dates across the whole city first to see the spread, then narrow by district using the table above. If your dates touch mid-October to early November, book now rather than later: that is Canton Fair, and the market clears 60–90 days out.

Which area is best to stay in Guangzhou?
Yuexiu, for most visitors. It holds the historic core, sits on Metro Lines 1, 2 and 6, and costs 30–40% less than Tianhe for an equivalent room. Switch to Tianhe for business or dependable English, Liwan for Cantonese food and culture, and Pazhou only during the Canton Fair.
Why do some Guangzhou hotels refuse foreign passports?
Because lodging foreign nationals requires a specific registration capability and licence that many small domestic hotels do not hold. It is common in the ¥180–350 band and you usually find out at check-in. Book through a platform that filters for foreign-passport acceptance and get the reservation confirmed, not just requested.
Is Booking.com good for Guangzhou hotels?
For international 4★ and 5★ brands, yes. For the ¥180–350 mid-budget band it is genuinely partial — Chinese domestic chains including Hanting, Jinjiang, Home Inn, Vienna and Atour dominate that band and are largely missing from it. We link Booking and still think you should know that before you conclude a district has nothing under ¥400.
How far ahead should I book for the Canton Fair?
Sixty to ninety days. The autumn 2026 session runs 15–19 October, 23–27 October and 31 October – 4 November, and rates around Pazhou go 2–4× normal during each phase. If your trip lands in those weeks and you are not attending, consider moving it — late November to early December has the same weather and none of the pricing.
Is it cheaper to stay outside the centre in Guangzhou?
Marginally, and it usually is not worth it. Panyu and the airport fringe sit in the ¥180–750 range against Yuexiu's ¥200–1,200, but you pay the difference back in 40–60 minute metro rides each way. Metro fares are only ¥2–8 a trip, so the real cost is your hours, not your yuan.
Do I need a visa before booking a Guangzhou hotel?
Check your entry route first, because it changed twice recently: 50 nationalities now get 30 days visa-free and 55 more, including Americans, get 240 hours of visa-free transit, with Baiyun a designated port since 5 November 2025. Hotel bookings are refundable; flights usually are not.
