Two Free Days at the Canton Fair:
What They Are Actually For

Quick answer
WORTH IT One free day is a Shunde day. Two is Shunde plus the old city

This is genuinely the most-asked and least-answered question about Guangzhou — a buyer once posted asking whether to stay in the city or day-trip to Shenzhen with two free days, and got exactly one reply. Here is the real answer. With one free day: go to Shunde. It is 45–60 minutes, it is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and it is the single best use of a spare day from Pazhou. With two: Shunde plus the old city — Chen Clan Hall, Shamian and Yongqingfang, all on Line 1 and all cheap. Skip Shenzhen unless you have a specific reason: it is 32 minutes away but it is another new commercial city, which is what you have been standing in all week.

Ranked, for a buyer staying at Pazhou

01

Shunde — the food day

WORTH IT45–60 min · ¥150–250 all in

A UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and where Cantonese chefs actually come from. Qinghui Garden ¥15, double-skin milk at its point of origin, and the best possible use of a spare fair day. Metro or intercity rail from Guangzhou South.

02

The old city, in one loop

WORTH ITLine 8 → Line 1 · under ¥100

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (¥10), Shamian Island (free), Yongqingfang (free) — a genuinely great half-day and a total contrast to Pazhou. Line 8 to Gongyuanqian, change to Line 1.

03

Foshan — kung fu and ceramics

WORTH IT30–60 min · ¥7–12

Zumiao (¥20–30) with the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and the Ip Man Tong, plus live lion dance in the forecourt. The Guangfo metro runs direct from Line 1. Foshan is the birthplace of Wing Chun.

04

Baiyun Mountain — the reset

WORTH IT¥5 + ¥25 cable car

After four days of exhibition halls, a mountain for five yuan. Line 11 to Yuntai Garden, Exit C2. Go early or late; the cable car queues on weekends.

05

Shenzhen

DEPENDS32–38 min · ¥74

Only if you have a supplier visit or a specific interest in Huaqiangbei's electronics markets. Otherwise it is another new commercial city, which is exactly what you have been in all week.

Questions people actually search

Questions people actually search

What should I do with free days during the Canton Fair?

One free day: Shunde, 45–60 minutes away, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and the best single day out from Guangzhou. Two free days: Shunde plus the old city loop of Chen Clan Hall, Shamian Island and Yongqingfang. Both beat a Shenzhen day trip for anyone who has been standing in exhibition halls all week.

Should I day trip to Shenzhen from the Canton Fair?

Only with a specific reason — a supplier visit, or the Huaqiangbei electronics markets. It is 32–38 minutes and ¥74, so it is easy, but Shenzhen is another new commercial city and the contrast a fair week actually needs is old Guangzhou or Shunde's kitchens.

What is there to do near Pazhou in the evening?

Party Pier is walkable — 10–15 minutes, or one stop on the Haizhu Tram — and it is the most reliable nightlife strip in the city, with riverside terraces facing the CBD. Beyond that, Line 8 gets you to the Pearl River light show at 20:00 or to Wenming Road's food street in about 25 minutes.

How do I get from Pazhou to the old city?

Line 8 to Gongyuanqian, then Line 1 west — about 35–40 minutes total to Chenjiaci for the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and Shamian Island is one stop further at Huangsha. Avoid 08:30–10:00 and 17:00–18:30 during fair weeks when Line 8 is at its worst.
