Guangzhou eats after midnight more seriously than almost any major Chinese city, and 夜宵, the late-night meal, is a fixture rather than an indulgence. What to eat: 紫苏炒螺 (perilla-fried river snails), charcoal BBQ (garlic oysters, skewers), 椒盐濑尿虾 (salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp), 干炒牛河, night congee, and — genuinely — 老火汤, old-fire soup, at two in the morning, typically ¥30–80 a head. Two corrections to what you may have read: the famous 鬼市 ghost market by Haizhu Bridge is a pre-dawn second-hand market, not a food market; and the best-known late-night street, Baoye Road, was cleared for redevelopment in 2023. The scene moves, so pick from a recent Dianping or Xiaohongshu post — and budget a DiDi home, because the metro has stopped by then.
Two honest cautions
Redevelopment and enforcement move the late-night streets. Baoye Road 宝业路 in Haizhu — for twenty years the city's best-known seafood-and-BBQ 夜宵 street — was ordered cleared in early 2023 and fenced off for upgrading that April; some operators reopened under Jiefang Bridge. The Yuancun late-night strip in Tianhe was cleared by the end of February 2026. If you are making a special trip across the city after midnight, check a Dianping or Xiaohongshu post from the last few weeks first.
Cash is genuinely useful here. Most stalls take QR, some do not, and at 02:00 the ATM options are limited. Carry ¥200–300 in notes. Central-bank rules in force since 1 February 2026 tighten the ban on refusing cash, which helps, but a stallholder with no change at 3am is still a stallholder with no change.

What is the Guangzhou ghost market?
鬼市, also called 天光墟 (daybreak market) — an informal pre-dawn market of second-hand goods at the south end of Haizhu Bridge, where traders lay out old electronics, books and oddments on the pavement in the small hours. Is it safe to eat street food in Guangzhou at 2am?
Yes. Guangzhou's street-food hygiene is generally good, the stalls are high-turnover, and the city's night streets are safe and busy. Pick stalls with queues, eat things cooked in front of you, and treat raw-marinated shellfish (生腌) with the same caution you would anywhere.
How do I get home after a late-night meal?
DiDi. Last metro trains leave around 23:00–00:00 depending on line and station, and the first run again at about 06:00, so plan the ride back before you go out. At 2am fares are low and the app removes the language problem entirely — this is exactly the situation street taxis are worst for.
What should I order for 夜宵 in Guangzhou?
紫苏炒螺 — river snails stir-fried with perilla, the signature. Then charcoal BBQ (garlic oysters, skewers), 椒盐濑尿虾 salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp, and 干炒牛河, the dry-fried beef noodles that are a wok cook's technical exam. And if you see 老火汤 at 2am, order it — that is the most Guangzhou thing on the street.
