Guangzhou to Hong Kong by Train:
47 Minutes, and One Warning
Guangzhou South → Hong Kong West Kowloon takes as little as 47 minutes, at ¥215 second class, ¥344 first and ¥645 business (MTR's published RMB fares for trains from 1 July 2026). Immigration for both sides is co-located in the same building at West Kowloon, so you clear mainland exit and Hong Kong entry without leaving the station. The detail most guides miss: Guangzhou East also runs direct trains to West Kowloon at the same fares. It is far closer if you are staying centrally, but the trains take about 1h35–1h45 and there are fewer of them, so the door-to-door saving is smaller than it looks. The warning: leaving the mainland uses up a single-entry Chinese visa. On the 30-day visa-free scheme it does not — each entry is a fresh 30 days.
Guangzhou South vs Guangzhou East
They are not interchangeable: one is fast and far out, the other central and slow. Work out the door-to-door time from your hotel, not the train time.

Also worth knowing: the Guangzhou East → Hung Hom conventional through-train was suspended in 2020 and resumption is unverified. The practical route to Hong Kong today is high-speed rail to West Kowloon, full stop.
The paragraph that saves people a rebooked flight
Hong Kong and Macau are separate immigration jurisdictions. Crossing into either is an exit from mainland China, whatever the map says.
If you hold a single-entry Chinese visa, a day trip to Hong Kong ends your mainland stay. You cannot come back on the same visa. This catches people out constantly, because the train takes 47 minutes and both immigration halls are in one building — it does not feel like an international departure. It is one.
If you entered under the 30-day unilateral visa-free scheme, none of this applies. Each entry is a fresh 30 days and you can bounce back and forth as often as you like.
And it works in your favour on the way in. Since 5 November 2025 Hong Kong West Kowloon has itself been a designated 240-hour visa-free entry port into the mainland. An eligible traveller can fly into Hong Kong, take the train north and enter China visa-free at the station. The rule that catches people: the onward ticket must take you from the mainland to a third country or region — somewhere other than Hong Kong, since that is where you came from. A flight home from Baiyun works; a train back to West Kowloon to catch your return flight does not.

How foreigners actually buy China rail tickets
The official channel is China Railway 12306, and MTR itself now names it the first choice for this route. Its English platform registers foreign passport holders with an email address, and sells tickets for trains up to 15 days ahead in RMB. The snag is verification: the phone number 12306 asks you to add before buying must be a mainland one, so if you cannot complete it, use MTR's designated Hong Kong ticket agents or the counters at the station.
Third-party agents such as Trip.com also sell these tickets in English against a passport and add a service fee; we have no affiliate relationship with any of them and therefore no link. Station ticket windows work and take passports, but queues at Guangzhou South are what they sound like. For the Hong Kong route specifically, book a few days ahead in peak season — the Guangzhou East trains in particular are few.
GBA intercity trains are different and much easier. Foshan, Dongguan, Zhaoqing and Huizhou run metro-style: no advance ticket, QR code at the gate, 39 stations. That is the network that makes the delta feel like one city.

How long is the train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong?

Which Guangzhou station is best for Hong Kong trains?
Usually Guangzhou South. It has far more departures and the fastest trains (from 47 minutes), but sits 17km southwest in Panyu, which adds 40 minutes and a metro change for most visitors. Guangzhou East is downtown on Metro Lines 1, 3 and 18, at the same fare, but its fewer direct trains take about 1h35–1h45 — so it only wins if you are staying close to it in Tianhe and one of its departures suits you.
How do foreigners book China train tickets?
On 12306, China Railway's official system: its English website and app register foreign passport holders by email and sell tickets up to 15 days ahead. If its phone verification defeats you, MTR's designated ticket agents, the station counters (passport in hand) and third-party agents such as Trip.com all sell the same tickets.
