City, Delta, Border
Three days covers the city properly. Days four and five are what make the trip: the Pearl River Delta is a one-hour living circle, so Shunde is 45 minutes, Foshan 30, Shenzhen 32 and Hong Kong 47. Our shape: days 1–3 in the city (old, new, food), day 4 out to Shunde or Kaiping, day 5 to Hong Kong or Shenzhen — or an overnight in Kaiping if the diaolou grabbed you, which they usually do. The warning that costs people money: leaving the mainland for Hong Kong or Macau uses up a single-entry Chinese visa. On the 30-day visa-free scheme it does not apply — each entry is a fresh 30 days.

Monday warning: Chen Clan, Nanyue King, the Guangdong Museum, Bai'etan and the Science Center all close on Mondays. If your five days include one, put Baiyun Mountain, Shamian, Chimelong or a day trip on it.
The two decisions that shape the week
Shunde — the food day
Forty-five to sixty minutes by intercity rail or metro. A UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and the source of Cantonese technique — double-skin milk, stir-fried milk and Chen Village rice noodles were all invented there. Qinghui Garden ¥15, meals ¥80–120pp. The best single day trip from Guangzhou if you came to eat, which most people who choose Guangzhou did.
Kaiping Diaolou — the UNESCO day
1,800+ fortified watchtower-houses built in the 1900s–30s by returning overseas Chinese, fusing Chinese defensive architecture with Roman columns, Baroque pediments and Art Deco. HSR to Kaiping South (about an hour) then 40 minutes by car. Five-site package ¥180, tickets valid two days. Doable in a long day; much better as an overnight.
Hong Kong — 47 minutes, and one caveat
Guangzhou South → Hong Kong West Kowloon in 47 minutes, second class ¥185–240. Immigration for both sides sits in the same building. If you hold a single-entry Chinese visa, this ends your mainland stay — you cannot come back. On the 30-day visa-free scheme, bounce freely. Guangzhou East also runs 13 daily departures and is far handier if you are staying downtown.
Shenzhen — 32 minutes, no border complications
Guangzhou South → Shenzhen North, 32–38 minutes, ¥74, and it is still mainland China so no visa question arises. The honest pitch: Shenzhen is the counterpoint city — new where Guangzhou is rooted, pan-Chinese where Guangzhou is Cantonese. Our comparison covers who should bother.
The two things that decide a five-day trip
China runs two separate schemes and most English-language guides are a policy generation behind. 50 countries get 30 days visa-free — the UK and Canada were added on 17 February 2026. Another 55 nationalities, including the United States, get 240 hours (10 days) of visa-free transit, and Guangzhou Baiyun became a designated port for it on 5 November 2025. The unilateral scheme is a trial currently valid through 31 December 2026 — it has been rolled forward twice and will probably be rolled forward again, but check before you book a flight into 2027.
Alipay and WeChat Pay both take foreign Visa and Mastercard now, and since 12 October 2025 you can tap a foreign contactless card straight at the metro gate. Two catches nobody prints: payments over ¥200 carry a 3% surcharge, and WeChat's RMB cap is ¥6,000 per transaction whatever the dollar limit says. Since 1 February 2026 every business is legally required to accept cash again, so carry ¥500–1,000 as a backstop. Complete passport verification in the app before you fly, or risk control will hold you to about US$200 a go.

Is 5 days enough for Guangzhou?
It is more than enough for the city and exactly right for the region. Three days covers Guangzhou properly; the extra two are what turn it into a Pearl River Delta trip — Shunde, Kaiping, Foshan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong are all inside an hour, and the intercity trains board like a metro with a QR code.
Can I visit Hong Kong on a Guangzhou trip?
Yes, in 47 minutes from Guangzhou South — but check your visa first. A single-entry Chinese visa is consumed when you leave the mainland, and Hong Kong counts as leaving. If you entered under the 30-day visa-free scheme, each re-entry is a fresh 30 days and there is no problem. If you are on 240-hour transit, Hong Kong is your onward destination and the trip ends there.
What is the best day trip from Guangzhou?
Shunde, if you came to eat — a UNESCO gastronomy district 45 minutes away where Cantonese cooking technique actually originates. Kaiping if you want the UNESCO architecture and the overseas-Chinese story. Foshan if kung-fu heritage appeals; it is the birthplace of Wing Chun and Ip Man taught there.
Should I stay overnight in Kaiping?
If the diaolou are the reason you are going, yes. It is 2–2.5 hours each way, so a day trip spends five hours travelling for five hours looking. An overnight lets you cover Zili, Li Garden, Majianglong and Chikan Ancient Town properly, and the two-day ticket package is built for exactly that.
